Solomon Airlines Resumes Inter Island Routes

The carrier has recently been able to restart domestic Solomon Islands flights with their Twin Otters. The aircraft had been grounded initially back in November 2021 due to civil unrest in Honiara, then again from January 2022 due to COVID. 

Solomon Airlines operates three Twin Otters, one DHC-6-300X2 and two DHC-6-300's.

Trans Maldivian and LIstudio Unveil New Symbolic Livery

Together with LI Studios SL, Trans Maldivian have publicly unveiled the latest special livery to adorn one of their Twin Otters. The design celebrates the beauty of Maldives’ underwater world, and promotes awareness of marine life. It appears below on DHC-6-300 8Q-MAI, in what I suspect is a composite image.

India’s Flybig to Acquire De Havilland Twin Otter Series 400’s

TORONTO, March 24, 2022 /CNW/ - De Havilland Aircraft of Canada Limited ("De Havilland Canada") announced today that Big Charter Private Limited has signed a Letter of Intent to purchase up to ten new Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft for operation by its promoted airline, flybig. The companies will work towards a definitive purchase agreement that would include five firm-ordered aircraft and options for another five.

"In conjunction with the UDAN initiative, the Indian Government's recently released policy to assist in serving small and remote communities, flybig's goal is to provide connectivity to communities that were not previously accessible by air," said Captain Sanjay Mandavia, Chairman and Managing Director, flybig. "De Havilland Canada's Twin Otter Series 400 is the right aircraft for our operations because of its proven record for safe, reliable operations and its versatility -- including the capability to land on land or water."

The Malaysian carrier is set to begin service to Tioman Island on 01-May-2022. The airline will operate their DHC-6-300’s on the new route between Subang and Tioman Island four times weekly, increasing to twice daily from 01-Jul-2022 to 29-Oct-2022.

Editorial Update

As promised earlier this year in the 2022 Site Improvement Campaign, I am pleased to report that the new Twin Otter World Production History site is now about 75% complete. This particular project began in May-2022 and involves the following improvements:

• Review and re-write of the life history of every Twin Otter, including new previously unpublished information;

• Additional airframe details added (eg. Airframe age, engine installation)

• Clearly identifiable current airframe status

• Search function available on every page

• Back-to-top link on each page (no need to scroll back up from bottom)

• Hundreds of new and previously unpublished photographs dating from the 1960’s to current, improved consistency of image sizing and captioning

• Familiar format, but improvements to functionality and appearance

When completed, the entire new site will be dropped seamlessly into the existing TwinOtterWorld.com URL.

World’s Oldest Operational Twin Otter Hits the Road for Tennessee

N607NA, MSN 4 was the oldest operational Twin Otter in the world, having made its first flight on 13-Apr-1966. On 08-Jul-1966 it was delivered to the Province of Ontario, Ministry of Lands & Forests, where it remained until returning to DHC in Jul-1969.

In May-1972 ownership of the aircraft passed to the National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) where it operated for the Langley Research Center, and the Lewis Research Center, which became the Glenn Research Center in 1999. NASA continued to use the aircraft for a variety of different projects for the next fifty years!

In Sep-2022 N607NA was passed on to Middle Tennessee State University, located at Murfreesboro, TN. It was moved on the back of a flatbed trailer from Ohio to Tennessee, and was re-assembled at MTSU’s campus as a technical trainer.

The DHC-6-300HG™ STC increases the payload capabilities of the basic DHC-6-300 Twin Otter Series aircraft from 12,500 lbs. MTOW (5670 Kg) to 14,000 lbs. (6350 Kg), providing an increase of 1500 lbs. (680 Kg) or 12% overall and represents a 31% increase in payload based on an average empty weight of 7700 lbs. Operations are allowed to the full 750 shaft horsepower of the PT6A-34 engines along with the improved efficiency and noise reduction of the Hartzell four blade "Scimitar" propellers. Additional aerodynamic and structural enhancements complete the modifications. As a Standard Commuter Category STC, DHC-6-300 and DHC-6-400 operators' area able to operate in revenue service without special purpose restrictions.

The Garmin G950NXi/G1000NXi navigation capabilities include Required Navigation Performance features with integrated radio modules providing VHF Comm/Nav, ILS and WAAS/SBAS-certified GPS, and LPV approaches meeting NextGen ADS-B "Out" regulatory requirements.

Regent Aircraft Services Rolls Out the Latest DHC-6-300 for Air Adelphi

DHC-6-300 MSN 282 C-GCWV is the latest Twin Otter to be completed by Regent Aircraft Services in Calgary, AB. Air Adelphi is the commercial arm of the Mustique Company, tasked with transporting guest to and from the exclusive island resort. As with the other company Twin Otters, MSN 282 carries the name of one of the beaches on Mustique, this time “Rutland” in honor of Rutland Bay on the island’s northeast coast.

During its time with Regent Aircraft Services MSN 282 had a Garmin G950NXi flight deck installed in coordination with Aerocorp Avionics, a brand new Kenn Borek interior and seating, as well as a full repaint into Air Adelphi branding. Additional upgrades were also undertaken at meet company requirements.

Cayman Airways Express and Air Tindi to Regent Aircraft Services for Completion of Checks

The second Cayman Airways Express aircraft, MSN 602 VP-CXA is currently enroute from the Cayman Islands to Calgary, where it will undergo an ADCF99-11 Corrosion Inspection and additional work with Regent Aircraft Services. The first aircraft, VP-CXB arrived back in Georgetown on 20-Oct-2022.

The ferry flight to Canada is being undertaken by Calgary’s Worldwide Ferry.

Cayman Airways Express to Acquire Third Twin Otter

Cayman Tourism Minister Kenneth Bryan has announced the acquisition of a third DHC-6-300 for Cayman Airways Express, pending Cabinet approval. The aircraft will improve connectivity to the sister islands, and Little Cayman in particular.

Manta Air Publishes Requirement for an Additional 12 Twin Otters

On 13-Dec-2022 Manta Air made their strategic growth plan for 2023/2024 public. Included in the plan was the opening of the Expressions of Interest (EOI) process for the acquisition of a further 12 DHC-6 aircraft to be acquired during 2023/2024. The company currently operates 13 Twin Otters, with 2 pending delivery.

Osprey Wings Closes Flying Operations

Osprey Wings, the Saskatchewan based charter operator of DHC-2, DHC-3 and DHC-6 aircraft has closed up shop following the completion of the summer season. The company is hoping to secure a buyer for the operation, which is being marketed by Colliers Canada. Osprey had been owned by the Thompson family for the last 50+ years.

Two Twin Otters were being operated, MSN 99 DHC-6-100 C-GPVQ, and MSN 155 DHC-6-300 C-GQOQ.

78 - DHC-6-200HG C-FASQ Planes & Parts Ltd., Cochrane, AB [Aerostar Alpha]

Flew Altenrhein/Saint Gallen - Belgrade 14-Dec-2022 on delivery to Aerostar Alpha. C-FASQ had previously entered the Zimex facility in Altenrhein on 18-Jul-2022, where it underwent a large upgrade project including a new interior, installation of required forward emergency exits, and a change to a long nose. The aircraft is seen below before delivery.

MSN 78 was originally built for NASA Commuter Airlines, but was delivered directly to Golden West Airlines in Dec-1967. It came to Canada in 1969, and flew for Time Air, Airwest, AirBC, Simpson Air, Sabourin Lake Airways, North-Wright Air, South Nahanni Airways, Air Rainbow, Arctic Sunwest/Summit Air, and received the 200HG™ upgrade by Ikhana in early 2015.
