Registered 22-Jan-2013. As can be seen in the photo below, C-GBEB has been under a lengthy rebuild by Rocky Mountain Aircraft at Springbank. The aircraft stalled and crashed into trees on approach to Hook Lake, NT on 16-Jul-2008. Given the recent registration again, it is presumably nearing completion.

Lost contact while flying from South Pole Station to Terra Nova Bay, Antarctica on 23-Jan-2013; ELT location was determined 24-Jan-2013, and the wreckage was located 26-Jan-2013 at the 13,000ft level on Mount Elizabeth. Sadly, there were no survivors amongst the three onboard.

C-GKBC had left Canada for Antarctica on 14-Oct-2012.

Blackstone acquires majority stake in Maldivian Air Taxi & Trans Maldivian Airways

An equity fund managed by Blackstone on behalf of it's equity partners has acquired a controlling interest in both of the Maldives based Twin Otter operators, MAT and TMA. Maldivian Air Taxi founder Lars Erik Neilsen and Trans Maldivian majority shareholders Lars Petre and Hussain Afeef retain substantial shareholdings, and will continue to play significant roles in the company, including serving on the Board of Directors.

The airline's combined fleet will include 44 Twin Otters, operating over 100,000 flights per year, and employ over 900 people.

Malaysia Airlines Signs Six Aircraft Deal for Viking Twin Otter Series 400

Contract to include Aircraft, Flight, Maintenance Training and Spares

Geelong, Australia, February 27th, 2013: Viking Air of Victoria, BC, Canada and Malaysia Airlines, of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, have signed an agreement for six DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft for operation by Malaysia Airlines’ subsidiary, MASwings. MASwings will become the first Malaysian-based operator of the new Viking Twin Otter Series 400, making it the nineteenth country to be added to the expanding global customer list.

The six new Series 400 Twin Otters are scheduled for delivery between 2013 and 2014, and will be utilized for regional commuter operations based in Kota Kinabalu, Malaysia. The new aircraft will be added to MASwings’ existing fleet of legacy Twin Otter aircraft, which have a 25 year proven track record for reliability, durability and suitability with MASwings’ theatre of operations in the interior of Sabah and Sarawak, the two Malaysian states in Borneo.

The Series 400 Twin Otters will be configured with a fully IFR Honeywell Primus Apex digital avionics suite, complete with two primary and one secondary GPS backed navigation system, Flight Management System TAWS, TCAS I, and EGPWS. With this aircraft purchase, MASwings will be the launch airline for Latitude Technologies SkyNode and IONode, an Iridium satellite communication package with WiFi enabled flight data acquisition, recording and reporting aircraft trend monitoring system. Also included in the six aircraft purchase agreement are flight and maintenance training, along with a comprehensive spares support package.

Datuk Capt Mohd Nawawi Hj Awang, CEO of MASwings, commented that “as a long time legacy aircraft operator, the Viking Series 400 won us over because of its exceptional performance, great operating economics, and the additional safety features offered by the integrated digital avionics suite. With the new satellite based navigational facilities fitted onboard, the operational and safety level will be greatly enhanced.”

Robert Mauracher, Viking vice president Business Development and general manager Maintenance Repair Organization, commented “Viking is particularly pleased to add Malaysia Airlines and MASwings to the Series 400 operator family. As our first Flag carrier, Malaysia Airlines has once again confirmed the Viking Series 400 Twin Otter as the best choice for utility regional transport in support of remote communities.”

With Twin Otter Series 400 in operation in 14 countries and a backlog exceeding $400M, the Series 400 is now confirmed as the best selling next generation19 passenger aircraft available today. Viking provides OEM support for the worldwide fleet of de Havilland legacy aircraft (DHC-1 through DHC-7) and forms part of Westerkirk Capital Inc, a Canadian private investment firm with substantial holdings in the hospitality, aviation, and real estate sectors.

The aircraft also took part in the Langkawi International Maritime & Aerospace Exhibition on 26/28-Mar-2013, during which time there were likely some demonstration flights as well.

On landing at St. Anthony, NL 28-Mar-2013 the nose gear failed after making contact with the runway surface. The aircraft subsequently swung to the left & departed the runway. The aircraft sustained damage to the nose area, and one wingtip.

While departing from the Mile 203 Dempster Highway Airport, YT 11-Apr-2013 the aircraft yawed to the left with the left gear entering shallow, then deeper snow. The take-off was rejected, and the aircraft left the runway, and came to stop in a ditch. Damage was sustained to the left propeller due to a tree strike.

Clipped trees immediately after take-off from Nathong, Laos 17-Apr-2013 and crashed in a canal. The aircraft was en route from Nathong to Vientiane, and was carrying 16 passengers and 2 crew. All occupants survived the accident with varying degrees of injury. RDPL-34180 was delivered to Lao Air Company in Dec-2011 after being previously owned by ARAMCO since 1969.

Viking Completes US Army Contract with Third Guardian 400 Delivery, Golden Knights Parachute Demonstration Team Accepts Final Aircraft

Viking Air Limited of Victoria, BC, Canada is delivering this week the third Twin Otter Guardian 400 aircraft to the US Army Golden Knights Parachute Demonstration Team, completing the multi-aircraft purchase contract. The US Army Golden Knights were an initial launch customer for the Twin Otter Series 400 program, signing the purchase contract for three aircraft in February, 2008.

The US Army Series 400 Twin Otters are configured with special mission equipment specific to the Golden Knights parachute jumping requirements, including air-operable roll up door, external jump step and hand holds, wall mounted bench seating, and crew relief station. All three aircraft operate under the Twin Otter Guardian 400 military variant increased gross weight allowance of 14,000lbs.

The first US Army Series 400 Twin Otter was delivered in September 2012, shortly after receipt of the United States Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Type Certification in June, 2012, making them the first US-based operator of the Series 400 Twin Otter. The Golden Knights have been operating the first two aircraft received under the contract out of their base in Fort Bragg, North Carolina, where the third aircraft will be joining them shortly.

Viking executive vice president, Dan Tharp, will be attending the handover of the third aircraft at a small delivery event this week in Murrieta, California, where the Golden Knights and US Army Fixed Wing Project Office delegates will be conducting the final acceptance inspection.

“The US Army has been a dedicated Twin Otter Series 400 customer from the outset of the program, signing on as an initial launch customer and working with Viking as an integral member of the Series 400 steering committee,” stated Dan Tharp, Viking executive vice president in charge of operations. Viking Nears Completion of Vietnam Navy Group “A” Guardian 400 Flight & Maintenance Training Program

Paris, France, June 18th, 2013:
Viking Air Limited and affiliate Pacific Sky Aviation Inc. of Victoria, BC, Canada confirm flight training is nearing completion for the first contingent of Vietnam Navy pilot delegates as part of the Viking Guardian 400 multi-aircraft purchase contract announced in May 2010. The pilot trainees have traveled from Vietnam to Canada to receive English language, flight and technical training over the past twenty (20) months, and will be officially graduating from the program in early July.

The unique flight and maintenance training program provided by Viking’s sister organization, Pacific Sky Aviation, encompassed English Second Language (ESL), ab-initio, private and commercial pilot licensing, multi-engine, night, and amphibious float training. Other partners on the program included Camosun College (Victoria, BC) and FlightSafety International (Toronto, Ontario).

The Guardian 400 aircraft training was carried out on the Navy’s new aircraft over the course of four months, clocking approximately 500 flight hours and 350 cycles on runway, soft field, and water based operations, instructed by established Twin Otter pilots with over 15,000 hours of combined experience on the type.

The maintenance portion of the program included six (6) weeks of mechanical training for the technicians who will be responsible for maintaining the aircraft at the Navy’s base of operations in Vietnam. Further support will be provided by Viking Series 400 Twin Otter pilot and Field Service Representatives based in Vietnam to support the aircraft as they enter into service and to assist in developing on-going operational procedures.

“This program has been specially tailored to the requirements of the Vietnam Navy, and is quite unlike any other training program in the world,” commented Michael Coughlin, CEO at Pacific Sky Aviation. He clarified, “A significant amount of the Twin Otter training focused on seaplane operations with the students completing over 2100 landings on lakes and the rugged coastline of British Columbia; this will be instrumental to their success in operating the aircraft for maritime patrol operations in Vietnam.”

The Vietnam multi-aircraft purchase announced in May 2010 stages the Viking Twin Otter Series 400 as the first Western-based manufactured aircraft purchased by Vietnam’s Ministry of Defense, and the first ever fixed wing aircraft initiated by the Vietnamese Navy. The contract includes six new Guardian 400 Twin Otters to be utilized for transport, resupply, maritime surveillance and search and rescue operations throughout Vietnam’s coastal regions. The aircraft are being delivered in a variety of configurations, equipped for both land-based and amphibious operations with convertible interiors including VIP, commuter, and utility layouts.

Pacific Sky is a Transport Canada approved Flight Training Unit providing flight and maintenance training in support of the Viking Twin Otter Series 400 program, including engineering and production tests, ferry flights, and specialized training.

Vityaz Avia Signs Seven Aircraft Deal for Viking Twin Otter Series 400

Russian Market Expands in Advance of Moscow Air Show

Paris, France, June 19th, 2013:

Viking Air Limited of Victoria, BC, Canada and Vityaz Avia Corporation, of Moscow, Russia, have signed an agreement for an additional seven (7) DHC-6 Twin Otter Series 400 for operation in Russia. The multi-aircraft deal brings the Vityaz aircraft order total to eleven, making Vityaz Viking’s largest single non-military customer to date.

The seven new Series 400 Twin Otters are scheduled for delivery through 2015, and will be utilized as utility aircraft to support remote communities throughout the northern regions of Russia. The first aircraft is scheduled for delivery in time for the MAKS International Air Show in Moscow in August, where the aircraft will be available for the first time on static display for viewing by the Russian aviation industry.

The Series 400 Twin Otters will feature as standard equipment a fully IFR Honeywell Primus Apex digital avionics suite, complete with two primary and one secondary GPS backed navigation system, Flight Management System, TAWS, TCAS I, and EGPWS. In addition, the aircraft will be configured with a variety of landing gear options, including wheels, amphibious floats, wheel/skis, and intermediate flotation gear (IFG). Airframe de-ice and other buyer selected options to be announced at a later date.

David Curtis, Viking president & CEO, announced the deal at the Western Canada Reception during the Paris International Air Show. N153QS returned to Victoria from the Ikhana facility in French Valley on 04-Jul-2013, and is awaiting delivery.

The first delivery of an advanced Twin Otter flight deck retrofit by Rocky Mountain Aircraft.

The obsolete “steam gauge” flight instruments are replaced by Universal Avionics EFI-890R Primary Flight Displays and a Universal MFD-640 Multi-function Display for enhanced situational awareness. The PFDs support Universal’s unique Vision-1™ Synthetic Vision option. The MFD provides the display for Universal Avionics’ Terrain Awareness and Warning System, as well as traffic, synthetic vision, navigation, maps and external video. The original electro-mechanical engine instruments were replaced with Electronic International’s MVP-50T Turboprop engine display system.

Registered 21-Aug-2013. To put the information in context; the fuselage of this aircraft was noted stored in a hangar at Whiteright, TX as far back as 2003. It was registered to Michael C. Vinther of Whiteright 28-Oct-2008 and noted in the same condition at the National Aerotech facility in Hampton, GA in Oct-2009 and Oct-2010. The registration N719AS was cancelled 18-Oct-2012, although it was placed on hold through 2016. By May-2013, the rebuild was well underway, with the cockpit section of MSN 510 having been fitted, and by the end of the month the aircraft was structurally complete and noted outside.

Viking Twin Otter Series 400 Selected Aircraft-of-Choice for Air Seychelles, Etihad Airways Equity Partner

Mahe, Seychelles, October 30th, 2013: Viking Air Limited of Victoria, BC, Canada and Air Seychelles, the national airline of Seychelles, have this week signed an agreement for three additional Twin Otter Series 400 aircraft to expand the regional carrier’s fleet.

After the successful entry into service of their first Series 400, Air Seychelles returns to Viking to triple their initial aircraft order and bring their fleet total to four Series 400 Twin Otters. The new aircraft, scheduled for delivery starting in 2015, will be configured as standard 19-passenger commercial landplanes and put into operation as domestic carriers throughout the Seychelles archipelago.

David Curtis, Viking president & CEO, remarked “Air Seychelles has been a long time and loyal operator of the Twin Otter, and was one of the first customers to commit to the new Viking Series 400 Twin Otter during development. They put a great deal of faith in Viking and our ability to deliver, and their return to Viking for additional aircraft speaks to Air Seychelles’ ongoing commitment and confidence in the Twin Otter Series 400.” He continued, “We value the relationship we have developed with Air Seychelles, and its shareholder, Etihad Airways, and are honoured that Air Seychelles has made the Twin Otter Series 400 their aircraft of choice in the 19-passenger category.”

”These aircraft are designed for Short Take-offs and Landings, and are robust in extreme conditions – something we have a lot of experience with in the Seychelles since the Twin Otters were first introduced here in the early 1980s.” commented Cramer Ball, Air Seychelles Chief Executive Officer. He added, “The new aircraft are the right tools at the right time for Air Seychelles.”

Air Seychelles was established in 1978 and began long-haul service in 1983. The airline currently offers international flights to Abu Dhabi, Johannesburg, Hong Kong, and Mauritius. Air Seychelles also offers more than 200 domestic scheduled flights a week throughout the archipelago, as well as domestic charter services. As the national airline of the Republic of Seychelles, Air Seychelles is a pillar of tourism, the island nation’s strongest and growing economic sector.
