Although U.S. registered, MSN 291 had actually already been in Canada since Jun-2019 when it returned from lease to ConocoPhillips Alaska.

Test-flown from Springbank, AB 14-Jan-2021. This is the former 8Q-TAH, which had returned to Canada in Oct-2020. I understand this aircraft has been placed, and will be delivered shortly.

167 - DHC-6-200 T-82 Fuerza Aerea Argentina

T-82 was damaged in a landing accident on 14-Aug-2019, 54km from the Moriambo Base on Ross Island, Antarctica, and had remained on site since then. During the current 2020/2021 Antarctic summer season the aircraft was recovered from the accident site in a mission undertaken by The Air Component of the Antarctic Joint Command.

The aircraft was removed in parts by an Argentine Air Force Bell 212 and transported to the Moriambo Base, as can be seen in the photos below.

Damaged on take-off from the Larsen C Glacier region in Antarctica 17-Feb-2021. The crew was retrieved with Bell 212 helicopters from the Argentine Air Force based at Mariambo. Accident pictures can be seen below.

Flipped over on landing on Male’s “North Right” water runway on 13-Feb-2021, coming to a stop in an inverted position. The aircraft was arriving Como Malifuushi, and all 9 aboard survived the accident, with 2 receiving minor injuries.

Sadly, 8Q-RAE had only arrived in the Maldives on 06-Nov-2020.

Trans Maldivian Airways Changes Hands

This summer Trans Maldivian Airways, the world’s largest Twin Otter operator finalized a deal which saw ownership change from Bain Capital to Carlyle Group. The transaction was mainly a vehicle to allow for debt restructuring after being hit hard by the Covid 19 virus, and the resulting grounding of TMA’s 56 Twin Otters.

Commented Carlyle Global Credit Managing Director, Christian Schmitz: “TMA is an operationally strong business with an experienced management team and clear competitive advantages. We are pleased to provide the strategic capital and expertise the company needs to return to growth. As vaccines continue to be rolled out globally, we expect travel to return to pre-pandemic levels in the Maldives, which remains one of most attractive vacation destinations in the world.”

The transaction marked the beginning of a new chapter for the airline, said TMA Chief Executive Officer, A.U.M. Fawzy. “We look forward to the support of our new owners as we ramp up business,” he added.

Air Seychelles Placed Under Adminstration

On 04-Oct-2021 Air Seychelles was placed under administration due to outstanding debts owed to former shareholder Etihad Airways, and an additional $72 million USD in loans funded by capital markets. The carrier will continue to operate under a restructuring plan overseen by the administrator. Air Seychelles operates five DHC-6-400 aircraft on domestic routes within the island group.

Collided with a water bungalow on take-off from Finolhu on 13-Nov-2021. The aircraft received penetrating damage to the right wing and engine in the occurrence. There were no injuries to either crew or passengers, and the aircraft was safely returned to the mooring. Following temporary repairs, it was successfully ferried out to Male on 17-Nov-2021.

Forced landing undertaken approximately 14km from Fort Providence, NWT on 01-Nov-2021. The aircraft was operating a Yellowknife - Fort Simpson service, and was attempting to divert to Fort Providence following loss of engine power. The company announced shortly later that the aircraft had run out of fuel.

There were no injuries to passengers or crew. The aircraft received damage primarily in the area of station 60, and was subsequently recovered from the scene via helicopter sling-load.

Long-term Springbank Airport fixture C-GBPE took to the road 29-Nov-2021 destined for the Time Air Historical Society in Lethbridge. The aircraft was acquired from Twin Otter specialists Rocky Mountain Aircraft, and joins several aircraft already donated to the TAHS.

Built in 1967, and originally used as a demonstrator by DHC, it flew with Time Air 1971/1972 followed by a succession of other Canadian operators from 1973 to 1995, eventually flying in the Maldives for a further 15 years before coming home to Canada in 2009. Acquired by Rocky Mountain Aircraft in 2010, it remained on the ground at their Springbank facilities until 2021.

Noted outside at Calgary-Int’l 11-Dec-2021 now in full purple Nautilus Resort c/s, as seen in the photo below by Dave Subelack. This is the 3rd Twin Otter to carry the distinctive livery, initially used on MSN 587, then on MSN 617, and lastly on MSN 529. It will be delivered to Manta Air in the Maldives by Worldwide Ferry, and is expected to become 8Q-RAJ.
