291 - DHC-6-300 N291AL Alberta Aircraft Leasing, Las Vegas, NV [Rocky Mountain Aircraft]

Updating entry for 31-Jan-2019; after having flown Springbank, AB - Fort St. John, BC 31-Jan-2019, and filIng to continue to Watson Lake, YT the aircraft instead turned back south, returning to Springbank, AB. I would venture that the aircraft developed a technical issue that required correction before continuing on delivery to Alaska.

It is not entirely uncommon to have the Twin Otter appear on a national postage stamp, particularly in countries that rely heavily on the type’s operation. In 2018, the Cayman Islands printed such a stamp in recognition of the 50th anniversary of Cayman Airways. With thanks to Jeff Childs, an example of one is below, it is of course very nice to see an aircraft you have spent years maintaining be featured.

Jeff has always been a supporter of Twin Otter World, and has recently left Cayman Airways to focus on the continuing growth of his company JLC Aeronautical. Their website is: JLC Aeronautical .

The Tahiti based DHC-6-400 F-ONOA doesn’t get a huge number of pictures, so it is great to feature the aircraft below. The second picture is the company Global Express C-GCDS.

If you want to see a huge number of excellent photos of visitors to Tahiti, you won’t find a better place than PYF Spotters. All types of aircraft, with some marine traffic thrown in for good measure as well.

Air Madagascar rebranded their turboprop operation under the name of Tsaradia back on 01-Jul-2018. Although the ATR’s received the new scheme early on, 5R-MGD seen below appears to be the first of the Twin Otters.

The aircraft has served internal routes in Madagascar for the past 48 years, having been delivered from the factory in 1971.

A great shot of the Four Seasons DHC-6-300 HB-LYC at Altenrhein/St. Gallen earlier this month, with credit to Roland Büsser.

An interesting history for MSN 655, delivered to Nepal Airlines in 1979 - it was damaged twice in hard landings in 1997 and 2002, and then parked in Kathmandu from 2002 to 2012. The aircraft joined Tara Air in 2012, and was damaged again twice that same year. In 2016 it was ferried to Switzerland in preparation for delivery to Island Aviation Services in the Maldives, arriving there in Oct-2016. A year later it would again be damaged on 04-Oct-2017 when it ended up inverted and submerged in the lagoon at Male Int’l. Airport.

The wreckage was transported back to Switzerland again, and it was registered to Zimex Aviation on 25-Oct-2018.

Such is the life of your average Twin Otter …….

Questions for the day….

Often the answers to some of my “mystery items” can be answered by one of the readers, so here goes:

  1. Why was the Summit Air DHC-6-300 C-FTFX ferried to (or via) Panama City 30-Nov-2018?

  2. What is the MSN for the Solomon Airlines DHC-6-300 H4-MAX which was delivered 05-Dec-2018?

Instagram / Facebook Twin Otters

Interestingly, I noticed that the Aeromaster aircraft in the first two images is actually the same machine as the Air Borealis one.

IKHANA Obtains Certification of the RWMI DHC-6-300HG™ Twin Otter Standard Commuter Category 14,000 lbs. MTOW Upgrade

470_N808RT_MURRIETA_2000.jpg

IKHANA Aircraft Services (IKHANA) announces award of the Federal Aviation Authority (FAA) STC for their RWMI DHC-6-300HG™ Standard Commuter Category Increased MTOW to 14,000lbs. “The FAA’s certification of our RWMI DHC-6-300HG™ upgrade adds significant capabilities for operators to expand their mission role, optimize payload and range, add value to their aircraft, and increase revenues.” states Mr. John A. Zublin, President and CEO of IKHANA. He adds, “this takes the aircraft well beyond its original capability. The Standard Commuter Category STC addresses a typical Twin Otter operator’s need for as much payload as possible. A Twin Otter can now take 19 passengers with 2 crew and fly 450-500 Nautical miles. Big picture, it offers increased utility with a rapid return on investment. This has been a long term and intensive engineering effort for IKHANA and we are pleased that this long-awaited enhancement is now approved and available on the market.”

The RWMI DHC-6-300HG™ STC increases the payload capabilities of the basic DHC-6-300 Twin Otter Series aircraft from 12,500 lbs. MTOW (5670 Kg) to 14,000 lbs. (6350 Kg), providing an increase of 1500 lbs (680 Kg) or 12% overall and represents a 31% increase in payload based on an average empty weight of 7700 lbs. Operations are allowed to the full 750 shaft horsepower of the PT6A-34 engines along with the improved efficiency and noise reduction of the Raisbeck/Hartzell four blade “Scimitar” propellers. Additional aerodynamic and structural enhancements complete the modifications. As a Standard Commuter Category STC, DHC-6-300 operators will be able to operate in revenue service without special purpose restrictions.

IKHANA Aircraft Services, a DBA of IKHANA Group Inc., provides DESIGN - BUILD - FLY solutions to the aerospace industry through integration of new technologies, aircraft modifications, heavy maintenance, major repair, and critical parts manufacturing.
